Top Six WordPress Plugins

I have been working with the internet for as long as I can remember. A lot of that time has has been spent developing websites using WordPress. Because of this I have built up a strong handy list of goto plugins that I install on almost every WordPress site I work on. Narrowing this longer list of plugins down into just the top six wordpress plugins was the hard part as I generally use a fair few more plugins as part of my armoury.

I have copied the description and a link from the wordpress repo and then given my thoughts underneath. If you think there are any amazing plugins, which i am sure there are, that I have missed please do leave a comment below.

So Here is my Top Six WordPress Plugins

Yoast SEO

WordPress Repo Description:
WordPress out of the box is already technically quite a good platform for SEO, this was true when Joost wrote his original WordPress SEO article in 2008 (and updated every few months) and it’s still true today, but that doesn’t mean you can’t improve it further! This plugin is written from the ground up by Joost de Valk and his team at Yoast to improve your site’s SEO on all needed aspects. While this Yoast SEO plugin goes the extra mile to take care of all the technical optimization, more on that below, it first and foremost helps you write better content. Yoast SEO forces you to choose a focus keyword when you’re writing your articles, and then makes sure you use that focus keyword everywhere.

My Thoughts:
Yoast SEO is my go to plugin for everything SEO in wordpress. It works by telling you when you have completed everything based on best SEO practices. This includes things like Title Tag, Meta Description and making sure you have the correct keyword density etc. It also helps you keep up with the changing rules of SEO as it is updated regularly. I cannot be without this plugin.

Block WP Referer Spam

WordPress Repo Description:
Block Referer Spam aims at blocking all (or most) websites that use Referer Spam to promote their – often somewhat dodgy – website content. This is accomplished by bots that simulate human behavior. They do this so well, that they even show up in Google Analytics. This plugin does not require any special configuration after installation. Once active and auto-update is enabled, you will barely see any of those nasty spammers any more.

My Thoughts:
Block WP Referer Spam is perfect for keeping your Google analytics clean. It blocks spammers from accessing the site, it does this via the .htaccess file. I have had great success with this keeping the analytics clean. It also downloads a new list every couple of days to keep you unto date. However if you do see any dodgy urls in the analytics you can manually add them to the list rather easily.

Redirection

WordPress Repo Description:
Redirection is a WordPress plugin to manage 301 redirections, keep track of 404 errors, and generally tidy up any loose ends your site may have. This is particularly useful if you are migrating pages from an old website, or are changing the directory of your WordPress installation.

My Thoughts:
The Redirection plugin is a great plugin when you are running a wordpress website. The plugin allows you to setup a local url to forward to an external url which is handy for affiliate marketers. This also track’s the clicks on each link. It’s main use however is to plain and simple redirect people from one location to another. This is handy when you move a page or change a post URL. You simply enter the old url and the new url and away you go. The redirect happens instantly.

WP Fastest Cache

WordPress Repo Description:
This plugin creates static html files from your dynamic WordPress blog. When a page is rendered, php and mysql are used. Therefore, system needs RAM and CPU. If many visitors come to a site, system uses lots of RAM and CPU so page is rendered so slowly. In this case, you need a cache system not to render page again and again. Cache system generates a static html file and saves. Other users reach to static html page.

My Thoughts:
I have tried quite a few Caching plugins for wordpress and never really liked any of them. That was before I stumbled across WP Fastest Cache. It is so simple but extremely effective. It boosted my PingDom speed test results from 60% to 93% on the Passive Income Trek website alone. I have now rolled it out across my portfolio of websites with similar results. A lot of the other caching plugins I tried were overly complicated or not as effective in my opinion as WP Fastest Cache so to find one that did exactly what it said on the tin was a great find.

Maintenance

WordPress Repo Description:
Maintenance plugin allow WordPress site administrator close the website for maintenance, enable “503 Service temporarily unavailable”, set a temporary page with authorization, which can be edited via the plugin settings. Easy customize, good look on all devices. Add your logo, background image, select the desired color, add text. Extended version of the plugin includes more settings that appear after installation PRO extension plugin.

My Thoughts:
The Maintenance plugin allows you to set the site as unavailable with a holding page whilst you develop the website. The Maintenance/Holding page shows up to anyone who visits the site unless you are logged in as an Admin. This allows you to develop the site before unveiling it to the world. The Maintenance page is pretty customisable which allows you to use it as a tidy looking place holder.

Social Locker

WordPress Repo Description:
The Social Locker locks your most valuable site content behind a set of social buttons until the visitor likes, shares, +1s or tweets your page. It helps to improve social performance of your website, get more likes/shares, build quality followers and attract more traffic from social networks.

My Thoughts:
Social Locker is a relatively new plugin to my personal repo, but one I can see becoming invaluable. It allows you to hide a voucher code or a Url or anything you like behind a share button so the reader needs to share before the hidden field becomes available. Thus helping you to get more social interaction. So far it seems to work very well
